FOOD FOR THOUGHT
What Does It Mean To Have A Successful and Fulfilling Future?
It is important that we consider how we can use our chosen career pathway, time, and skills to:
Positively influence our wellbeing
Bring benefits to our own lives
Positively influence and bring benefits to our community
Hedonic happiness is achieved through lived experiences of enjoyment:
Will you enjoy the tasks you will be undertaking?
Will you find enjoyment in learning about the field?
Eudaimonic happiness is achieved through experiences of meaning and purpose:
What benefits will your work/studies bring to your wellbeing?
How might your work allow you to improve the lives of others?
How will your vocation allow you to contribute positively to your community?
How might you be able to use your skills to make a positive change to the world?
“From the beginning therefore he [man] is called to work. Work is one of the characteristics that distinguish man from the rest of creatures, whose activity for sustaining their lives cannot be called work. Only man is capable of work, and only man works, at the same time by work occupying his existence on earth. Thus work bears a particular mark of man and of humanity, the mark of a person operating within a community of persons. And this mark decides its interior characteristics; in a sense it constitutes its very nature.”
(Pope John Paul II)
One route for progression is no better than another - all provide us with an ability to contribute to our community.
It is said that dignity and happiness exist in accomplishments, from the day to day, to the notable.
But not all work is fun and games! We must recognise that through our struggles and by overcoming challenges, we are working towards accomplishments.
"Nothing worth having comes easy."
(Theodore Roosevelt - Former US President)
"Our great desire is that each of you keep up your eagerness to the end, so that the things you hope for will come true."
(Hebrews 6:11)
